Overcoming OCD: A Journey of Recovery and Healing
Sixteen-year-old LM suffered from OCD, anxiety and depression. Here is how she got her life back because of early intervention, and compassionate mental health support.
At just 16 years old, LM’s life was full of overwhelming fears of contamination and health anxiety. Living in Bangalore, far from her native Tamil Nadu and adjusting to a new city, she found herself trapped in a cycle of obsessive thoughts and compulsive rituals. Simple daily activities became daunting; handwashing up to 50 times a day and bathing multiple times, even in the cold of winter, left her hands raw and bleeding. The anxiety was so intense that resisting these rituals triggered panic attacks, making school and social life nearly impossible. LM also battled symptoms of depression and anxiety, further impacting her well-being.
Recognizing the severity of her condition, LM’s family sought professional help. With the support of an Mpower psychiatrist and a dedicated psychologist, LM began her journey toward recovery. The therapeutic process started with building trust and understanding, followed by psychoeducation to help LM gain insight into her obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD). Through Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) and Exposure Response Prevention (ERP), LM gradually faced her fears—exposing herself to situations she once avoided, like touching mud or using the washroom, with the encouragement of her therapist and family. Family counselling also played a crucial role, addressing the home environment that contributed to her symptoms.
The transformation was remarkable. Over time, LM’s compulsive behaviours diminished, her intrusive thoughts lost their power, and she regained control over her life. Post-therapy assessments showed only very mild symptoms of OCD, and LM was able to focus on her studies and enjoy a healthier family environment. Most importantly, she learned to prioritize her mental health and became an advocate for mental well-being among her peers.
Reflecting on her journey, LM shared, “Therapy made a lot of changes in my life and helped me deal with the pressure of OCD. My psychologist supported me, validated my feelings, and helped me face my fears. Now, I can brush off intrusive thoughts and feel free to pursue my dreams. I’ve learned to prioritize my mental health and educate others about it. I am grateful for the support I received.”
LM’s story underlines the power of early intervention, compassionate care, and the importance of mental health support. With the right help, recovery is possible.
